The rich widow and Ni Suwadi
Now, in the village of Paricoro, there lived a rich widow of a village chief by the name of Nyai Puspomadu. People held her in high esteem because of her generous nature and devotion to God, as well as her faithfulness and loyalty towards her late husband, Ki Demang Paricoro. Though she was still young and beautiful and most wealthy, she did not want to re-marry. Every year, she would commemorate her husbandâs death by holding a ceremony during which the holy Qurâan would be recited. She would also give alms and ritual offerings, all for the benefit of her husbandâs soul. By chance she heard about Kyai Nurgirindroâs guests, the five santris from the region of Kedu. Upon learning that they were adept in rebana (Javanese drums) music, she invited Ki Nurgirindro to lead the ceremony and extended the invitation to his guests.
Mas Cabolang came disguised as a woman as he wanted to mix with the lady guests and Nyi Puspomadu. He called himself Ni Suwadi. The ceremony proceeded solemnly and without mishap. Ki Nurgirindro asked Nurwitri to begin the rebana recital. After a while, Nurwitri invited Ni Suwadi [Mas Cabolang] to sing. First, he sang songs in Arabic. Even though the people could not understand the meaning of the words, the tunes and the singerâs sweet voice delighted them.
When Ni Suwadi had finished singing, the next performance was an emprak (magic) show. When that ended, the santris returned to Ki Endrasmoroâs residence. Before Ni Suwadi left, she whispered in Nyi Puspomaduâs ear that she would come back the next day with Mas Cabolang.
